Red Ranger Adventurer #01 — Large Round Objects

Nice hat.

Impressions:

Oof. Weekends are looking pretty awful this season when a Jump show is at the top. As expected here, about 98% of the jokes are the girl smuggling basketballs in her bra saying “That is the wrong cliche for this setting” when he does a cliche sentai thing. I’m not sure what the other 2% is, but I’m including it as a margin of error. Which isn’t to say that it’s all that. Sometimes she explains the concept of magic in the setting too. Given that probably 20% of the cheat power things have the protagonist donning a costume and half of those eventually involve giant robots or fighting giant monsters within the first couple episodes, even the premise isn’t all that creative. It’s just calling out explicitly what they’re doing. And I guess saying he had his cheat power ahead of time, which makes it a super power, not a cheat power. Completely different.

The fanservice is probably the most interesting part. Not a moment is missed where she can’t cross her arms under her chest to make it bounce, or the camera pan just enough so her chest is taking up half the foreground. But even that pales in comparison to something like Classroom of Heroes, a show that also had an idiot protagonist Doing His Best as fanservice was chucked at him physically. It emphasized characterization AND had gags AND fanservice though. People learned things, developed, grew, even from the first episode, not sat through a lesson on the metaphysics of magic in between six hundred canned reactions to “sentai explosion exploded.”
