Today was kind of a bucket lister for me. I’ve been to Honen-in (probably my favorite place on Earth) in every sort of weather, including typhoons. But never snow. Measurable snow is a rarity in Kyoto and the timing has to be just right for for me to be able to get out and explore. Today is a holiday (the Emperor’s birthday), and it was snowing pretty heavily in the morning. So I managed to hike up there and get some photo and video on my old iPhone 7 (Enzo needs a new phone desperately). It’s 2:30 PM as I type this and the snow is already gone, which is pretty typical. Snow in Kyoto is a very mono no aware experience.
It didn’t disappoint, but Honen-in never does. It’s a truly special place with an ethereal charm like none other, even in this most ethereally charming of cities. I’d place this and the peak of koyo season as the two most beautiful incarnations of Honen-in that I’ve been lucky enough to experience.
