The Saint is Too Perfect #01 — Noblesse Oblige

Nah. Eat the rich.

Yes, the host is still on fire. It’s driving me crazy as I try to actually do the minor image manipulation in browser like… copy and pasting, and the entire thing seizes up for three straight minutes.

Impressions:

You could retitle this “She should’ve smiled more” and skipped the entire first episode. Every single character except her sister that had more than 30 seconds of screentime is a cackling psychopath that would put Cruella de Ville to shame. And this is treated as a joke with goofy sound effects and silly faces made in reaction despite the forboding dramatic music playing. Don’t think that this makes the titular character come off any better either. Her entire schtick is that she impassively blankly stares at literally everything and maybe a little too curt with people. Because she doesn’t smile enough, like a woman’s supposed to.

But it also means that she’s not really a character. She’s a prop that’s there solely to be the brunt of everybody’s abuse while she stoically takes it. We don’t even see her actually do anything saintly that would show her sacrificing stuff. We’re told that she went through all manner of harsh training… like having to study. And take fencing lessons. Woe is the nobility, and how they much they endure to be our betters. Nor does she react in a way that would indicate she’s actually upset, again despite the dramatic music. She makes a stupid face and maybe an internal comment of “that does not seem correct.” So it’s meant to entirely be a comedy? The jokes suck too, because that’s all those are; a silly face and over-explaining what just happened. And of course, the end where she’s shipped off and now everybody loves her, but that’s for next week.

I mean, I wouldn’t call this worse than the previous cheat power show, but there’s not much to recommend this one either. There aren’t thousands of other identical shows, merely dozens, and most of its direct clones tend to have a spunky or spirited princess, or more of a gimmick around them being a villainess or to be executed rather than just… told to wander off. In slavery. But the good kind where the master appreciates you.
