Apocalypse Hotel #01 — NieRly Inhospitable

Some goth girls in leggings probably wouldn’t hurt.

Impressions:

If any moment killed this for me, it was when it decided to make a joke about the shampoo hat missing. You can tell it was a joke because it repeated it about six times, AND then she said “AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!” This was then followed by an excessively overdramatic speech and more yelling before it was found right in front of her. If that’s the kind of humor we’re going to be relying on, I’ll be lucky to make it through the second episode. You can get long speeches over-exaggerating mundane things from anywhere in anime comedies. You don’t need cutesy robot girls, an apocalypse, or a basement full of corpses for that, and it seems a waste to have all those things and then your big gag being a girl going “AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!”

It’s also hard to tell what direction the show is even going to be going in. The episode established the apocalypse, that the cloying robot girls was going through the motions like anime girl Wall-E but not nearly as charismatic or personable, and then decided to do it a few more times just to really drive home how boring and futile it is. I got it on the first go round. You can move on with the story now. Then an alien shows up, but oops, episode over. Except then the ED shows that a family of tanukis is hanging around? Guess the planet isn’t so deserted after all, or that’s just nonsense. So outside of the last 30 seconds and ED, all the episode really did was introduce the premise and then repeat itself a few times. Also yell loudly. And play some cabaret music that anime songwriters don’t generally get to use?
