I am an alien who does alien things.
Impressions:
I think I’d give this the nod over the ballpark show, but I dunno. It’s still not really clicking with me. The humor is at least different from most current anime comedies, in that it’s not constant screaming, at least until the black monolith bot showed up who constantly screamed. At the same time, the humor otherwise was just “alien does weird alien things.” And… that’s not really outside the norm either. Shows like Squid Girl, Muromi, that animal girl harem thing (or any of the fifty thousand of them), all had characters who would randomly spew strange fluids or do random nonsense. There’s no fun fact about how koalas eat their own poop or are notorious chlamydia spreaders though, which is mostly a plus, but only so much of the episode can be consumed by “alien does weird thing.”
It’s the lack of any substance beyond that which is failing to elevate it. And what substance exists is pretty haphazard. She has a crisis of faith 15 minutes in thanks to the screaming robot, but a couple minutes later, has a flashback out of nowhere and spontaneously gets over it. The whole thing was just a couple minutes of the episode, both predicated on nothing, and resolved by nothing so it could have a weird religious scene and vomit in her face. I recognize the joke was made, without being screamed at even, but it was still “random alien thing happens,” and I’m still unsure where it’s trying to go or what it even wants to be. Is there going to be another random alien or screaming robot next week to do the exact same random existential angst moment before simply… not caring about it again? Feels a lot like that way.
