And only eight premieres tomorrow. Yay.
Impressions:
I’m worn down to the bone on these insecure teenager things and almost to the mindset where a cheat reincarnation thing would be nice just for a change of pace. Whether it’s thrown out of the home for being too perfect a saint, or reading books, or having the wrong color hair, you’ve seen this already. Oh, wait. This one is also about having the wrong color hair. It’s also really absurd how contrived the mistaken identity thing is. He assumed that because she’s taller than her sister, she must be the older one, and never at any point in the entire birthday party did anybody use either of their names, nor refer to either of them in ways that would distinguish them. All he knows is that the older sister is named Anastasia, and that one sister is taller than the other. That’s enough to demand a specific one’s hand in marriage so we can stretch out this misunderstanding for not just one episode, but multiple episodes before anybody besides he and his maid start figuring it out.
Like all of these, her self-esteem issues are at a comical level. They’re not bad people or abusing me, I’m worthless garbage and they’re simply trying to help me not be trash. It’s ridiculously over the top, and then juxtaposed with her sparkling in the usual shoujo mist and twinklies as every single person in the world besides her parents is instantly captivated by her inner beauty shining through. And how silly and cute her insecurity is, not actually traumatic. Giggle giggle tee hee. Isn’t she just pitiable AND adorable? Cinderella as a story doesn’t work without her making her own dress and then having her dream ripped to shreds. Skipping over the part where the protagonist wants something, makes an effort, and faces adversity because of it leaves the character as only a prop, or worse, a Mary Sue, who isn’t an active participant in her own story. I’m probably being a little more derisive here than it actually deserves since it’s not all that egregious, just run of the mill, but after five of the exact same self-deprecating protagonists devoid of all agency, I’m exhausted.
