New Anime

Onmyou Re:Birth #03 — Obligatory Fanservice

Couldn’t you do something original with your original anime?

Impressions:

This feels like precisely the kind of thing to contrast with the previous show. While clearly aimed at a slightly… slightly… older crowd, the characters are ironically so much less mature and more obnoxious than a class full of elementary students. A large part is because literally everything revolves around the protagonist whose entire schtick is to just yell about nobody believing hard enough in how much protagonist power he has, and how they too could bask in reflected glory if only they did, but them all struggling with their inferiority compared to him, only to come around to the realization that they too could go “raaargh” and believe in him to solve everything… It’s like the Bechdel Test, but even more egotistical around this imbecile.

Maybe that’s just the key difference. A centralizing character who isn’t grating. Because it’s definitely not the janky mech fighting, and both have the goofy as hell monsters. I guess Nube also doesn’t have the issue of everything being super duper ultra serious life and death matters while the cast is sniping at each other and bickering like 10 year olds. Are we fighting the existence threatening apocalypse, or do we all need to have juice and naptime because we can’t get along for five minutes? Imagine if this really is this girl’s entire arc. A rehash of the dude from last episode, except with blushing and a panty shot. And yet, it very well may be.
