Apocalypse Touring #02 — Yelling at the Ocean

The finest Japanese tradition.

Impressions:

Same issues as the first episode. It’s not using its premise very well, or honestly, much at all. They revive a robot guy, but he’s actually a cyborg, then he remembers that his family is all dead and wants to be left to die himself. The only part that could be considered a twist or unexpected is that he’s a cyborg rather than a robot, but that’s told up front and he just has robo-amnesia which stops the ‘plot’ from progressing for about five minutes. Most of the episode is spent as the previous one was, looking out over overgrown that sparkles beautifully without a trace of napalm or nuclear waste. I was promised radioactive scorpions or at least corpses in the apocalypse. Maybe it’s the ridiculous sanitization of how everything is always so beautiful that’s robbing it of actually feeling like the apocalypse.

Anyway, it ends in the same place that it started, looking out over bloom-heavy scenery while swelling music plays. Which is the same thing that it uses for girls fishing. Or riding a motorbike. Or it’s a day ending in Y. This should have been the central character driven story of the episode, but it’s lacking in actual developments and especially contrast with any other scene, so it all blends together.
