My pooping is upon you. I must go.
Impressions:
This is a good example of a mediocre premise and story being propped up just by solid pacing and a passable protagonist. Even the little character explanations are about a sentence and we move on. Contrast in humor too, between the absurdist bragging about his pooping routines to the more traditional anime overreactions. But also them scowling and walking away instead of picking fights over every little incident helps immensely both in keeping things moving and not making them all come off like children throwing tantrums. Same with the deadpan hazing and acceptance thereof. Even ends pretty strong with the director actually putting in some real effort to that final scene and all its quick cuts to really push the confusion and shock.
Not sure I’d be able to recommend it to anybody who doesn’t already like the oldschool LN harem-club setups regardless, but those are a rarity these days. It really is pretty much just another Haganai/Oregairu/etc, with the protagonist doing a lot of load-bearing. Confident, snarky, and driven to change things, all the things that endear me to a character, no matter the setting. Also, quiet, because they establish quickly that he’s watching and analytical, so the terseness also helps. The harem is… less good, being entirely cliche archetypes so far, but none gets to hog the screen for more than a minute or two at a time, so while not good, not obnoxious either. Of course, I felt similar at the start about that friend’s sister show last season, and it lived up to none of it, but I’d rather watch ten of these than a single one more cheat RPG world show.
