Why even bother drawing a face when the mouth is 90% of it.
Hulu decided to post two episodes of this today. Every terrestrial broadcast was only the first.
Impressions:
It is with no small amount of relief, and perhaps even pride in the adapters, that I can report that they decided that the full page spread of the dude being tentacle raped was not something they wanted to adapt. Generally, when there’s tentacles, they’re going to end up in someone’s orifaces. Sure, they couldn’t come up with anything, and ended up stretching out a like 10 page chapter to try to be half an episode, but that’s a very unusual amount of restraint and good judgement that you just don’t see often in anime, and especially in adaptations. Good job, team.
But that’s where the plaudits end. Not that it was particularly offensive or anything, but maybe that’s just the previous show traumatizing me talking. Just annoying generic ‘humor.’ Annoying because like most comedy these days, the joke was that the other kid looked at him, and he internally screamed “AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!” That first scream was the worst by far, lasting nearly five seconds, and even though the ones to follow were less obnoxious, the damage had already been done. So when he goes merely “AAAHH!” when it comes time to pick up something dropped, or “OOOH!!” when he says hi, the gaggy overreaction thermocline has already been breached and the damage is done. And as mentioned above, the pacing was less than snappy, so the long… loooong pauses in between screams kept them from being too irritating, but also made it easy to completely zone out. Honestly, wondering if they were indeed going to have the kid be tentacle raped by his lunch was the most exciting experience for me.
