At least one of them fought back… for five seconds.
Impressions:
I think it was the dramatic music playing for a full minute at the very, very slow zoom ins, which themselves were about thirty seconds of completely empty space at the end of the episode, attempting to sell the reveal about each other as some kind of big moment that put the bullet in this show for me. I fully expect the next two, if not three episodes, to be them clutching their little fists and being wibbly over their feelings. For this person they’ve known for like three days and gone on two just-friends dates with.
Well, the rest of the episode was also pretty disheartening. After the aborted non-action scenes a couple weeks ago and then an entire week basically off for barely animated recap, this is what we come back to. A bunch of squirming tentacles that get effortlessly one-shot. Oh, but here’s the big boss… wait, no. Flashback time again that actually, it’s some very old midboss training dummy. Okay, now we can one-shot it. Even the worst seasons of Symphogear would have moved on to fighting something other than random blobs seven damn episodes in. The biggest threat to anybody was poor coordination, and even then, since one of them facetanked both a train crash and bomb exploding in her face with zero reprecussions, there’s no impact or stakes for anything that happens. Nothing matters when they’re functionally invulnerable. And they’re being pitted against… random tentacles. Great. Maybe zoom in slowly for 45 seconds next time.
