A Star Brighter than the Sun #01 — He Blinded Me With Sparkles

Ow, my eyes.

Impressions:

You can probably guess exactly what kind of show it is just from how many screenshots are absolutely faceblasted with sparklies and the pastel filter. It is not subtle in the least. The entire episode is just her mooning over this dude for no real reason, most of it in flashbacks at that. Twenty straight minutes of “he’s so dreamy.” But she’s awkward because she’s… tall and sort of, but not actually, athletic, so love is impossible because he’s just so dreamy. And so she will just bask in his sparklies because he’s so dreamy. Yeah, I get that. Shut the hell up about it already.

No, I wasn’t a fan. It was not one of the few actually cutesy romances with people who actually interact and have any amount of chemistry. The entire thing takes place in her head, which does lend a slight creepiness factor to it since it’s a hair off from being obsessed stalking, but we’re meant to obviously see that he has a crush on her too, so it’s just cute. Supposedly. Watching teenagers mince around their feelings while never actually doing anything has never been to my taste, and this is extra heavy on the mincing and hero worship, again, for no actual reason. He’s a pretty boy. That’s reason enough to devote your entire teenage world to obsessing over him. Fine for a joke. Quite a bit more obnoxious when presented as a beautiful, magical thing to be stretched out forever.
