Way to put in minimum effort, Lara.
Impressions:
Rounding things out for all shows this season having terrible endings, we come to this, where it won’t even commit to… well, anything, really. All that stuff about needing to murder someone? A lie. You can just make up a new light. Which is funny because they go out of their way to state that Mari is not true love like NORMAL LOVE. It’s a new kind of special love that will fix things… uh… eventually, off-screen, not now, later. At which point an entire kingdom of vengeaful merpeople will be revived and be unleashed upon the world. What a happy ending for everybody!
The chickening out is probably the anchor, but it really just highlights how much of a total nonentity Lara as a character was and why none of this works. She was having flashbacks to her part-time job boss. Multiple times at that! This was one of the most formulative people in her life, apparently. All centered around “Lara, be true to your feelings,” whatever the hell that means. Not reject your murderous father. Not reject the patriarchial constructs of love and relationships. This random Dutch artist kid? Eh, whatever. He’s there, I guess. Have feelings, Lara. Just… believe in… believing in something. Which is a struggle for her, but eventually, she overcomes it and… wants… uh… things to be different, but not change in any way, and they don’t. The status quo is restored, and everybody is happy about it. Again, ignoring the imminent Atlantis invasion. Great work, team.
