Impressions:
*tap* *tap* Is this thing alive? Anyway, new likely disappointing season finally kicks off, with mainly sequels I’m ignoring and then seven goddamned shows on Saturday. Yay. It’s probably not a good sign to begin with a huge warning to not do anything in the show that it’s about to glorify the absolute hell out of. And not the suicide. We don’t need to warn you about that. It’s everything else. You can have shows about mass murdering human trafficking rapists without needing a warning that this is bad actually. To be immediately followed by a girl screaming and gasping in terror, and then one of those obnoxious overly loud OPs that’s all flashing lights, fast cuts, and boobs. Denpa, I believe the kids these days call it.
For there, it’s back to cutesy girls, then her mother losing everything on day trading and killing herself, then we end again with boobs. Interspersed throughout are fun facts about day trading, specifically the foreign exchange. The whole time, I’m wondering what the hell this show is trying to be or do. I guess it’s sort of like your Needy Girl Overdose or Happy Sugar Life where the juxtaposition of existential horror is against… fanservice, but the actual content is just reading Wikipedia pages about financial trading, girls screaming with closeups of their eyes bulging, and then zoom ins on their cleavage or in the bath. On their own, each thing is… less than ideal. Thrown together haphazardly as an advertisement for day trading? I don’t understand how this exists, or why it would need to in a medium with so many very slightly fantasy versions of it that aren’t trying to hew uncomfortably close to reality. Plus, this is five years behind the times. It’d be crypto or Kalshi these days. Can’t help but feel like someone looked at the “oh no, my apes got slurped” crowd and decided to make something with all their boxes checked, which just amount to traumatizing women into killing themselves, boobs, and lines on graphs.
