Impressions:
I didn’t go back and watch the original’s first episode, but… yeah. I still don’t understand why this exists. Characters, writing, humor were all perfected in August of 1987, but the problems that needed updating? A slightly different color scheme, a few more frames of animation, and the nipples sanded off. Better animated? Maybe, but with our ‘fights’ still being looped frames and characters teleporting, far from well animated. If you want to watch a classic, by all means, go watch a classic. If there’s some technical thing that needs fixing for modern audiences or hardware, make the updates. Want to do your own take on a classic, updated for a modern age or with a unique twist? Sounds great.
But a shot for shot, scene for scene, beat for beat redo? I genuinely do not understand the point, and it instantly irritates me on a fundamental level. Unless it’s some perverse indictment of how little anime has changed or evolved in the last 30 years. Girls are still being walked in on in the bath. They’re still screaming “PERVERT!” But now, the saturation is much higher, and no nipples allowed. That’s the lasting change for a modern audience. Are we going to return to this for a third remake in 2049 with now somewhat more detailed hair and a yellow tint to reflect the burning planet?
