Nina of the Starry Kingdom #01 — Human Trafficking Day Continues

Well, humans and humanoids at least.

Impressions:

The writing’s not getting much better either. She waits until she’s bathed and dressed in the finest of clothes and THEN starts throwing a tantrum. She declares that she has nothing left to lose, and then a couple minutes later, is shocked and taken aback when some random servant says she could die as that thought never occured to her. She hates him, but all of a sudden, she’s depressed by not living up to his expectations. She’s poor and wants everything, but her fondest wish is headpats from pretty boys who yell at her. The evil queen similarly swings between supposedly being a cunning conspirator and tantruming trainwreck at a moment’s notice.

It’s honestly not as bad as that makes it out to be. It’s just a standard bundle of Princess/Pauper cliches/story with somewhat worse written characters than usual. Then again, the standard are overt Mary Sues who charm everybody by their verve and sheer goodness alone, and this one only somewhat does that while otherwise swinging wildly being existential melancholy and petulant child. Maybe it’s just the chaos that makes it feel not as bad as pure cliche monotony, but it’s still hard to call that a positive for the show.
