Mayonnaise Bread #03 — Creativity and the Internet

Not things that generally go together.

Impressions:

Remember this show from its pre-air three weeks ago? Well, it hasn’t improved much, and is already attempting to reuse jokes. The core of the issue I have with it remains largely the same, and it’s the same as a bunch of these meta-media shows. As “man who grew up with and uses the internet”, I feel like I have a general understanding of the internet, even if I myself am not part of the Tik-Tok generation, or really all that into streamers. But I am very aware that “do wacky original things to stand out” is absolutely not what makes streamers popular. It wasn’t even what made network TV popular even at the height of the reality show craze. Maybe in the gameshow era, if you want to go back about forty years. Imitation and riding whatever the local trend of the week is. Chugging milk, the ice bucket challenge, cinnamon challenge, let’s plays, planking, watchalongs, so on and so forth. Hell, doing internet stuff was a large part of Michael Scott’s character in The Office nearly twenty years ago. And yes, we are all old.

Which is the framework for this new character. She’s a hoarder and a gambling and… that’s really kind of it. Not any kind of fun or interesting compulsive gambler. Just has some gambling lines tacked onto her dialogue every now and then and is otherwise just a literal trash person. So they make them eat garlic so they can all do their ‘wacky’ drunk reactions to it, and for no particular reason, that goes sort of but not really viral. Again, with so many eating and food based viral fads already out there, you’d think they’d be able to look at those and have something funny to say or joke to make, but instead go back to the joke they made in the previous episode. I’m very close to giving up on Mondays, though I haven’t seen yet how Shy will continue to disappoint me.
