Patron Pick Summer 2024: Shoushimin Series – 07

After two extremely trivial (not a judgment thing, just the facts, Ma’am) episodes, Shoushimin Series finally unleashes some plot in Episode 7 (out of only ten, in case you forgot).  Yeah we have the usual sweets obsession and Jougarou gazing into the camera a lot, but it’s all building towards something this time. Or is it? With this show I think it’s pretty clear you can never be too sure.

For starters Yuki invites Jougarou (it’s not like you’re in a relationship, Son – you are in a relationship) out for another on her “Top 10” sweetshops checklist stops. And because- well, you know why – she has to make a riddle of it. Of course he figures it out, tearing himself away from Agatha Christie and arriving an hour early. But there are to be no burgers in peace for Kobato-kun. Kengo is once more in charge of complicating his life, this time as he’s staking out his “friend’s” sister, supposedly caught up in a drug gang. And Kenken immediately drafts Jougarou to help, leaving behind cryptic instructions because- well, you know why.

I can’t shake my view that Kengo is basically an idiot. But be that as it may, his ability to entangle Jougarou is undeniable. Osanai-san shows (she was actually at BB Burger the whole time) up in a full hippie costume for some reason (though she changes out of it from her rolling suitcase, which high school girls always have, totally normal). Then they have their sweets, and the topic of the girl and the drug ring comes up in conversation. It all started back when they were in middle school it seems, when the sister of the friend was falsely accused of ratting out the ringleader. That ringleader has now tracked her down, and is threatening her.

One can’t ignore the fact that if Kawamata-san didn’t narc on the perp, someone else did. Maybe coincidence that in the immediate aftermath of her conversation with Jougarou Yuki supposedly gets kidnapped, and her mother is presented with a ¥5 million ransom demand – or maybe not. Yuki seems to have an unerring nose for trouble so she’s clearly gotten herself involved with the bad girls, though to what extent by choice we’ll have to wait until next week to find out. It’s always a bit of a minefield when pure slice-of-life series get serious in their final episodes (as they usually do), but this could still turn out to be a head-fake more than a real development. That would certainly feel more in-character.
