Elysian Film Group have recently confirmed that the iconic Studio Ghibli film, Princess Mononoke, will receive an IMAX cinema release in the UK and Ireland from 15th August 2025. This IMAX version of the film also uses a new 4K restoration that was directly overseen by Studio Ghibli’s Atsushi Okui, who has been involved in nearly every major Studio Ghibli project since 1993.
Animated by Studio Ghibli, and originally released in 1997, Princess Mononoke offers a compelling story from Hayao Miyazaki where humans and nature clash and bonds are forged. Princess Mononoke has had many releases in the UK, including Cinema, Home Video, and Streaming, but this will be the first that it will be screened in 4K onIMAX screens in the UK and Ireland.

There, he stumbles into a bitter conflict between Lady Eboshi, the proud people of Iron Town, and the enigmatic Princess Mononoke, a young girl raised by wolves, who will stop at nothing to prevent the humans from destroying her home and the forest spirits and animal gods who live there. Featuring the voice talents of Gillian Anderson, Billy Crudup, Claire Danes, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Billy Bob Thornton.

This IMAX release of Princess Mononoke will be screened both English and Japanese with English subtitles, but specific IMAX locations have yet to be confirmed. The good news, is that the Elysian Film Group are planning to screen the film in over 50 IMAX sites across the UK and Ireland. The IMAX screening of Princess Mononoke is also one of many ways that the Elysian Film Group are allowing fans to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Studio Ghibli brand.
For the time being at least, Princess Mononoke is expected to screen in IMAX Cinemas across the UK and Ireland from 15th August 2025. Further details, and ticket availability, will become available in the coming weeks.
