Polar Opposites #01 — Girl Makes Faces

Certainly will be obnoxiously screen-cap spammed.

Impressions:

At least it’s expressive, but the issue with its premise is that this is already the cliche standard going back probably forty years. The fashionable girl and the gloomy boy, covering everything from Dandadan to a hojillion light novel high school harems to Yamada’s Aborted Sex Adventures. And speaking of the latter, I’m going to drag it up again as an example of this kind of show being done correctly. Or Pseudo Harem for that matter for a more recent example. Yes, I know it’s meant to be ‘funny’ that she’s an awkward mess over literally everything. I don’t find it cute. It’s grating and prevents everything from progressing, be it story, humor, or characters. If you want to have a neurotic character, why not have them be neurotic about actual things to be neurotic over? Relationships are awkward and weird. Adolescence is awkward and weird. Sex is awkward and weird. But you have to actually interact with each other in some kind of meaningful way, and the chemistry between them is a frantic chihuahua combined with a pile of sand. So even the ending rings pretty hollow because both are cariacatures, not characters.

All the humor relies on making a mountain out of every miniscule thing that happens so that she can obsess over it, and by obsess, I mean murder the pacing and make silly faces. Again, the problem there is that’s anime’s, and Jump’s in particular, standard for absolutely everything. Making faces and yelling is a poor way to live your life. Again, it is expressive, and better animated than most shows this season, low of a bar as that is. I want to be kind to it just for not being… the other slop that has overwhelmed the medium… but it’s not like we’ve been lacking for popular girl x sullen boy shows either, no matter what flavor of drama or romance, or genders reversed, as is the final new show of today. So I also feel like I’ve seen this exact episode at least fifty times in the last couple years alone.
