Nintendo held a surprise, and rather short, Nintendo Direct event late last night where they officially unveiled Star Fox for the Nintendo Switch 2 and confirmed that it will be landing worldwide on the 25th June 2026. Digital pre-orders are available through the Nintendo eShop with physical edition pre-orders also available through retailers and the Nintendo Store.
This Nintendo Switch 2 version of Star Fox looks to be a modern-day-remake of Star Fox 64, known as Lylat Wars in Europe, which sees the Star Fox team on a mission to stop Andross from taking control of the galaxy. The 15 minute Nintendo Direct event gave fans an in-depth look at what to expect from this new variation on Star Fox; but at its core it looks to retain the original gameplay with new visuals, control styles and online multiplayer functionality.
New features include three difficulty options for the main campaign, with challenges available for each mission that differ between normal and expert difficulty, support for the Nintendo Switch 2 Mouse Mode function, which allows a second player to fly or control aiming, and online multiplayer that can be enjoyed through GameShare and GameChat. Speaking of GameChat, you can use a compatible Nintendo Switch Camera to convert your face into that of Fox McLoud and it will copy your facial movements on screen. The campaign mode has also been improved with new cutscenes that further expand the world of the Star Fox team and their origins.
Star Fox 64 is currently playable on the Nintendo 64 Classics App for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers on both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 conosles; but in the meantime this new Star Fox game is expected to launch on 25th June 2026 for the Nintendo Switch 2.
