Possibly one of the greatest animated movies of all time, and my all time favourite animated film, The Transformers: The Movie, will return to UK cinemas this September as part of a 40th Anniversary Celebration event known as The Apology Tour. The film will be screened from 17th September 2026 using a new 4K remaster and will also be available in 4DX at participating venues across the UK with tickets available to book online right now.
The Apology Tour for The Transformers: The Movie is a year long celebration for the movie that not only celebrates the 40th Anniversary of the film, but also acts as an apology for the trauma caused due to the destructive and devastating nature of the film. Of course, The Apology Tour is much more than just a cinematic re-release of a fantastic film, as the film will also have an additional post-credits scene featuring Optimus Prime. Beyond the film itself the iconic soundtrack is being reformatted (remixed) and re-released online, and a new wave of toys and collectables inspired by the film are also being released worldwide.
About: In 1986, THE TRANSFORMERS: THE MOVIE rolled into cinemas and changed the franchise forever. Unicron arrives as a planet-sized threat to the universe, heroes rise, legends are forged and an entire generation of kids were changed forever by THAT moment, which still hits like a truck. Featuring an iconic voice cast, unforgettable animation and a soundtrack that had absolutely no business going that hard, the film remains one of the boldest animated classics of its era. Now, forty years later, it returns to the big screen in 4K for a special anniversary celebration of the battle, the music and the legacy. Stay through the credits…because as this journey ends, a new one begins.
When The Apology Tour was announced I initially thought it was going to be for US audiences only, but that’s not the case. The film will receive limited screenings at participating cinema chains (including Cineworld, Savoy and Vue) across the UK in both Standard 2D and 4DX from the 17th September 2026 and tickets can be booked online right now. Toys and collectibles related to the film will also be released in the UK, and songs from the reformatted soundtrack can be streamed online worldwide.
The Transformers: The Movie has received many releases in the UK, initially on VHS before being re-released (and then remastered) on DVD, Blu-ray and even 4K UHD Blu-Ray. Fans of the site may remember in 2016 I did a comparison between the different versions and more recently, in 2021, unboxed the 4K UHD Blu-Ray version of the film from FUNimation. While the film has received many home video releases this will be the first time, in a long time, that it has received a remastered cinematic release in the UK.
