Nintendo, in partnership with The Pokémon Company, have today surprised fans by announcing that the GameBoy Advance versions of Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen will be releasing digitally on the 27th February 2026 for the Nintendo Switch. Additionally a Pokémon Presents Direct will also be taking place on the same day, which is of course Pokémon Day.
Each game is priced at £16.99, and are currently available to pre-order on the Nintendo eShop, for the Nintendo Switch with different language versions available for purchase in Europe. These releases of the game(s) remain faithful to the original GameBoy Advance experiences, and even local functionality has been kept in (to a certain extent). Not only will players be able to playthrough the Kanto Region (like its 2004) but they can also connect with up to four players locally to trade and do battle. Sadly online play is not supported, but these games were originally only played locally.
About: Pokémon FireRed Version is a remake of Pokémon Red Version, one of the first two titles in the Pokémon video game series. Pokémon LeafGreen Version is a remake of Pokémon Green Version (known as Pokémon Blue Version in Europe), one of the first two titles in the Pokémon video game series. This Game Boy Advance game was originally released in 2004. Now you can enjoy this classic Pokémon adventure on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2!
The thrill of the Kanto region, as well as familiar Pokémon, are just as you remember them – with updated graphics compared to the original Game Boy title. The Sevii Islands – not present in Pokémon Green Version – have also been added, greatly expanding the areas you can explore and the scope of your adventure.
Some excitement doesn’t fade no matter how many years pass. Whether it’s choosing your first partner Pokémon, confronting a sinister organisation or encountering a legend, a world of dreams and adventures with Pokémon awaits. Let’s go!
The release of Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen on the Nintendo Switch does not require a Nintendo Switch Online subscription and they will not be included in the Nintendo Classics GameBoy Advance Collection, so everyone with a Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 will be able to enjoy these games on a modern console. The release of Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen is also to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Pokémon franchise, which began on 27th February 1996 with the release of Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green in Japan and as part of this celebration a Pokémon Presents Direct will take place on the same day (27th February 2026) at 2pm UK Time.
For the time being Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen on the Nintendo Switch are available to pre-order on the Nintendo eShop, with both games due to be released on the 27th February 2026. Further details for the different language versions (in Europe) can be found here.
