Japan, do you have something you want to share about cults?
Impressions:
Anime, how many shows are we going to have this season about a dude dragging a bunch of teenage girls off to a compound in the woods to learn magic? And same as all of them, the whole schtick of learning the minutia of the setting and the specifics of magic remains utterly tedious. And that’s what consued two thirds of the episode. I. Do. Not. Care. I couldn’t even say that all the new characters were introduced well, or were focused on. Even the main character barely did anything more than stand there and say “Oh, that’s interesting.” Which is better than saying “Huh?” and repeating back the previous sentence to cue further explanation.
Things take a severe turn in the last five minutes, but not for the better. I know it comes from some random-ass singles, but the whole deal is nonsensical. She resonates with them, sings a duet, and then the evil spirit of Tesla nods and walks away. But wait, this is all also being gamified and they’ve expanded their territory, which… uh… does what? Why were they even there in the first place? They got some beep that they needed to respond to, but it was a dude who wanted to fight in a field? And then, after an entire episode rambling about ghosts and spirit power, they state their overall goal, to defeat the evil AI that steals everybody’s music. Which has barely been an aside to 90% of the infodumping in the episode. If the entire episode was this cavalier with the script, it’d at least be consistent, even if that’d make it functionally no different from that other show this season about weirdos channeling ghosts for super powers. Plus a terrible advertisement for a song in the middle.
