And pancakes.
Impressions:
Not too shabby a start, but if you’re not a fan of shoujo stuff, I think it’s likely a hard sell. It’s the standard wallflower thing x popular pretty boy thing, just executed a bit better than most on top of the weird monster girl twist. Which also helps the pacing a lot, because we get through the shoujo bits in fourteen minutes and can spend the rest of the episode doing corny CGI Godzilla. Which isn’t exactly a positive. There’s not any kind of satire to it, nor any big action scene. It’s pretty much just… there. Eating up five minutes instead of continued blushing and stammering.
The strength comes mostly from the main characters being very expressive and forthright. No paragraphs upon paragraphs of stammering and whatnot. Still plenty of unneeded internal narration, but less than usual. It’s always better to see characters struggling by actually interacting with the world around them than their own insecurities as to even try. The dude too, immediately jumps to his own insecurities about being ostracized for his appearance, which is the easiest in imaginable, even if the entire monster thing makes that extremely on the nose. The animation is doing a lot of work too conveying her frustrations and being emotional rather than monotonous endless blushing and stammering. Well worth at least a second glance in any case, especially given the competition.
