Surely nothing bad will happen to anybody.
This was a two episode premiere, but with I believe eight shows today, both of the doubles (Nanoha is the other) are going to have the second part pushed off until at least this evening, if I get to them at all, though this one at least is likely.
Impressions:
The headspace for this is pretty weird. They’re unnaturally cheery about slavery and child trafficking, but then she does try to run away from the people who bought her, but when caught, throws a tantrum. Not really about being a slave, or being taken from her home and family, though she does mention it. But because she hates studying. And so the local pretty boy takes her to the roof and drops a pan, thus imparting on that studying is actually fun. That apparently solves everything because then there’s a timelapse montage and she becomes a devoted scholar. Still at the age of 10 or whatever.
Of course, I know how the manga goes, and did glance ahead to the second episode, the existence of which seems pretty required (and also serves as the elephant in the room) because this one wasn’t particularly engaging. It does have Saru’s unique artistic flair, but the main character especially is a bit too much of a nonentity for me. Everyone is, kind of. I think they wanted to make them all cheery and happy to make killing them all in the second episode more tragic, but that’s just because it’s the default for any slaughtering of villagers. I think it’s mainly the abrupt 180 in her attitude based on learning one little fun fact, plus all the weirdness of how they’re handling her being a recently kidnapped slave to start. But hey, almost everyone dies next episode anyway, so there’s that to look forward to.
