Childhood Friend was a Girl #01 — Boy Re-Meets Girl

Impressions:

AKA “The Pretty and Pure Girl at my New School is Actually a Childhood Friend I Used to Play With and I Thought She Was a Boy”. Because all Monday shows must have overwrought titles, apparently. I want to talk to whoever did the OP. I feel like they may need to work through a few things. It has him stumbling through an apocalyptic hellscape, thorny vines wrapping around him, until he glimpses the lead girl, finds the strength to struggle free and leaps into a world of sunflowers. It’s… a little over the top, shall we say.

But does have a bit of flair completely missing from the actual episode, which is the same boring milquetoast dude meets quirky manic pixie dream girl setup as ever, with little comedy attempted, only an occasional silly face, and no chemistry because he’s basically indistinguishable from Rodin’s Thinker, in animation, denseness, and the general inert properties of being made of bronze but unfortunately more clothed, which absolutely could’ve livened the show up. Also, don’t lecture me on how bronze is actually very reactive and a decent conductor. Physics is a casuality in the face of my own comedic metaphors.

The twist being what’s given in the title. And like the OP, it’s on the nose, as he can’t shut up about it. He introduces himself at the new school by talking about how he used to have a friend. He internally narrates how he used to have a friend that she reminds him of. He stares blankly for an entire afternoon after learning that she’s his childhood friend, repeating it and wondering if it’s really true. And at the end of it, he vows that the status quo is the status quo and friends forever. It truly was *pause for dramatic effect* the spring time of youth. *gagging noises*
