Unfortunately, not the Bravern kind of horny.
Impressions:
Ah, the 70s. Well before even I existed. I never watched the original Grendizer, so I can’t say if this is any kind of faithful reboot, but it certainly seems poorly written enough to possibly be one, and I generally got the impression that it was largely resented at the time for crapping over the original Mazinger characters/franchise to elevate the sidekick, which this certainly had that vibe. Dude crash lands on Earth with amnesia, becomes racecar driver with hourly PTSD panic attacks, learns that his bestie is secretly a giant robot pilot, loses his amnesia and tries to robo-cockblock his bestie, and we’re only halfway through the episode.
It’s not a more modernized or self-aware homage like Bravern at any rate. Certainly cheesy, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it was largely a shot for shot remake, especially with all the random corny moments where people yell out their special attacks or it cuts to one of the obligatory girlfriends to yell encouragement like they operate on the same power source as Tinkerbell. Then the other dude conjures a giant robot quite literally out of his ass and saves the day by… uh, teleporting in between them and then having electric horns that vaporize all enemies while snatching the severed robo head away. From a large wheel and a crane, I think? Not a compelling or exciting action scene that’s going to be appearing in any showcases.
