Not sure this is the correct way to deal with grief.
Eight premieres to get through. It’ll be a haul.
Impressions:
What a frankly bizarre episode. Dude is sad about his dead dog, so a literal monster shows up, sets a massive fire that can be seen from across the city in his yard and throws all of his dead dog memorabilia into it. All this is set to melancholic, supposedly heartwarming music as he muses that his dog is indeed dead and gone forever. I’m no expert in grief, but I don’t think that this is a generally accepted or correct way to deal with it. Nor is “burn everything that makes you sad” probably something that should be set to an uplifting tune with the triumph of spirit.
It’s another thing that’s hard to tell what it’s actually going for. You’d think having a pyromaniac little gremlin, it’d be a comedy, but there are no actual jokes in the episode. Just cute? The titular dog is barely around, so if that’s the case, they’re really trying to keep away from it. Drama then, by all the moping about dead dogs? Hard to make that case too when that seems resolved, not to mention resolved in the fashion of “all life is fleeting, burn everything.” Or maybe next week, he’ll be sad about his favorite LN being canceled so they’ll burn the local library to the ground. That would certainly be… something.
