Beefcakes #00 — The Mega-Recap

Riiiight.

Non-Impressions:

I’m not entirely sure what to say about this ‘episode.’ The best analogy I can probably come up with would be… let’s say there’s a new Dragonball series, but then the first episode is a recap of the entire franchise and timeline to date. Not just DBZ, but everything from the original series, GT, Super, the movies, the games, the filler, every spinoff, all of it. If you’re a fan, I… guess it might be nice to see it for nostalgia? But if you’re not a fan, it’s a weird barrage of recap, but superficial, and with a bunch of now awkward racist and out of date stereotypes from 40-50 years ago, all blasted at you from a firehose. Through the medium of a bunch of naked sweaty dudes in a shack in somebody’s backyard, reminiscing about their glory days.

Instead of just making the new series welcoming to newcomers, which is a hard sell for me in particular because this is proto-Jump before Jump even became really a thing, it’s a catchup recap trying to cover probably around 15 things in a single episode instead of just what would be important or relevant. Focus. But even then, they’re largely indistinguishable from each other. I wrestled a dude because he was bad, but I persevered! And yeah, some of the designs are galling/astonishing to look at, like the one dude who’s literally just a spring, and I have no idea with the swarm of floating heads/masks, but this franchise exists to sell small cheap plastic toys, and once they exhausted all the racism, it was down to Kaiser Soze designs up from whatever was close at hand. Good thing none of them had a piston nearby or we might have ended up with Lord Vibrator.
