Cheer For You #01 — Manic Pixie Dream Girl High

My favorite is the parkour one because she talks the least.

Impressions:

Come on, PA Works. I know you know how to animate cheerleading routines. You did it in the opening. So why are we suffering through this uncanny valley CGI intro sequence? It’s creepy. Everybody moving as one in rigid precision at a different framerate as the background and the audience. Just rotoscope it. Or did you spend too much on the radioactive outlines highlighting characters and drawn backgrounds. It’s not the first time they’ve used that art style, nor will it be the last, but it still doesn’t look any better, especially when every character’s hair shading is some random color just to make them all look especially unique and not at all like poisonous animals.

It’s a pretty standard PA Works “girls in a club” show. They’re cheerleaders this time, including the one that was dropped and now has spinal injuries. Everybody’s some flavor of manic pixie girl who just wants to do their best. There’s the bland protagonist, the injured one, the foreign one, the parkour one, and the rich one. Each one has to get their five minutes, so the episode doesn’t have so much of a plot or structure as it is just declaring “Hey, there’s girls. And they’re together.” I guess that the protagonist has PTSD, but by chasing the parkour one, she remembers the joy of… being tossed in the air? And then the episode ends. I sure bet they’re going to do their best.
