New Anime

Quick Look: My Hero Academia: You’re Next (Steelbook Blu-Ray) [UK]

“NEXT, It’s Your Turn” That is the question being asked on the back cover of My Hero Academia: You’re Next, and, courtesy of Crunchyroll (UK), we can explore the steelbook edition of the film in more detail. As a reminder My Hero Academia: You’re Next is available on Steelbook Blu-RayBlu-Ray and DVD in the UK and the film can also be streamed on Crunchyroll and Netflix.

My Hero Academia: You’re Next is the fourth feature-length-film within the My Hero Academia franchise and it takes place within Season 7 of the anime, between the Paranormal Liberation War and the Final War, and sees the class of U.A High School go up against someone who aims to be the next symbol of peace, Dark Might.

Synopsis: Synopsis: In a society where heroes and villains continuously battle in the name of peace and chaos, Deku, a U.A. High School student who aspires to be the best hero he can be, confronts the villain who imitates the hero he’s long admired. Can Deku and the rest of U.A. High Class 1-A protect the world by putting an end to Dark Might, the man claiming to be the new Symbol of Peace?

It’s an interesting film, with some epic fight sequences and few twists in the story, and makes a nice addition to the overall My Hero Academia franchise. More importantly, the film is a self-contained story while further exploring the world that is being destroyed by the rise of villains. The Blu-Ray disc meanwhile contains the film with a nice mixture of bonus features in full high definition quality.

Blu-Ray Disc Contents:

1 Film on Blu-Ray Disc (Region B only)

English & Japanese 5.1 Dolby TrueHD with English subtitles

Bonus Features

“A Piece of Cake” Exclusive Animated Featurette

“Manners” In-Theatre Pre-Movie Featurette

Trailers (Japanese with English subtitles only)

Opening Song (English localised text)

The Steelbook Case:

The steelbook case is obviously the focal point of this edition, and for My Hero Academia: You’re Next you’ll find that the case features the two main posters (or visuals) of the film. On the front you’ll find the main visual, of which features Class 1-A, a selection of pro heroes, and of course the new characters featured within the film. The back cover on the other hand is the films teaser visual, of which sees Deku in his hero attire and Dark Might lurking in the background.

As with all Limited Editions released by Crunchyroll the Steelbook features a piece of card that wraps around the case, and this will have to be removed in order to see the back cover and to get inside of the case. Naturally this is glued down, and for this set at least the glue was particular strong as not only did it bend the card, but the glue also remained stuck on the steelbook case itself.

This card, or carded information sheet as I describe them, is where you’ll find all of the information about this set. This means that the visuals on both the back (and front) of the case remain untouched other than the films logo.

As shown above, once you remove the Blu-Ray disc you will be able to see that the steelbook case features inside artwork. It’s an absolutely amazing piece of art and shows Deku, Shoto, Bakugo, Ida and Uraraka charging in towards Dark Might. Sadly Dark Might is covered by the plastic of the case, so he isn’t immediately noticeable, but it is still a nice piece of art to have included.

An Interesting Selection of Bonus Features:

Whether you decide to pick-up the Standard Edition Blu-Ray or the SteelBook Edition Blu-Ray of My Hero Academia: You’re Next the disc will feature the exact same content, including these four pieces of bonus material. All of the bonus features are presented in Japanese (with English subtitles) and the inclusion of them, especially the animated featurettes, are a weclome surprise.

A Piece of Cake: Exclusive Animated Featurette is a 3 minute animated short that sees Class 1-A doing warm-up exercises before a quirk training session, and during these exercises Mina asks Deku if he finds it confusing controlling the different powers within All for One. The conversation quickly leads in to a funny scenario where they discover Deku’s notes and learn that he has been taking notes on each persons abilities, as well as the best possible team-up combinations that can be achieved.

The story for this short was originally written and illustrated by Kohei Horikoshi, and was included in the Volume Next book that was given out in Japanese cinemas when people saw the film. When the film was released on Blu-Ray and DVD in Japan the one-shot manga was adapted and animated into this special short, so it’s great that Crunchyroll and Toho included it in this UK Blu-Ray release of the film.

The second bonus feature on the list is Manners: In-Theatre Pre-Movie Featurette, and this was an animated short that was shown just before the film in Japanese cinemas. It sees Deku, Bakugo and Shoto at the cinema and issuing instructions on proper etiquette while watching a film, such as no talking, no screens, and no loud noises.

Despite being informative, you can get a sense of each characters personalities and is fun to watch. SPY x FAMILY CODE: White also did a similar thing in Japanese cinemas, but sadly that wasn’t included in the Blu-Ray releases of the film. Once again this bonus feature is also only in Japanese with English subtitles.

Before we talk about the trailers, let’s talk about the bonus feature Opening (English Version), as I thought this was rather fascinating and worth mentioning. Traditionally the opening (or ending) song will be presented in textless form, but for this the opening is actually the English localized version of it.

For whatever reason, most likely a licensing condition, when you watch the film it uses the original Japanese materials, so Japanese text is displayed on screen during the opening sequence. To see this text translated in English you need to watch the bonus feature Opening (English Version). Sadly we don’t have a textless form of the opening, but having the original Japanese and localised versions is still pretty interesting.

Of course, the final piece of bonus content is the trailers. A variety of trailers are included, such as the original teaser, the main trailer and 30-second promotional videos, and all of them are presented in Japanese with English subtitles. There are no English dubbed trailers or localised materials, it is simply the Japanese trailers translated with subtitles. To some this may seem like a disappointment, but for me it is a welcome addition as we don’t always get to see Japanese materials included with western releases.

Final Thoughts:

Whether you decide to get the Standard Edition or Steelbook Edition of My Hero Academia: You’re Next the on disc content will be the same, of which offers a well-rounded package of the film and promotional material, but the steelbook edition of the film does offer a more premium product with its steelbook design and offers more artwork to look at.
