Goodbye Lara #01 — The Carnivorous Mermaid

There’s a weird but welcome amount of decapitation in this show.

Impressions:

Of all the weird things to focus on, her casually ripping apart fish was definitely not one I would’ve expected. Hell, even just mermaid stuff in general is kind of unexpected since the promos were all high school frolicking. But it also shows how much you can do in 15 minutes. You can adapt and summarize the entirety of the Little Mermaid. Sure, you get no Caribbean songs about life under the sea, or thingamabob silliness, but you can do a lot when you don’t piss around with tutorials. But also, there’s not a lot to say. It’s… the Little Mermaid. I’m old enough to have the Disney version be a formative part of my childhood and am haunted by Under the Sea. It’s… just the Little Mermaid, told in a brief 15 minute summary with the actual ending where she goes all foamy.

Also a little surprising is that it seems to be going more of a magical girl quest direction where she’s supposed to be slaying the witch to restore the mermaid kingdom whose souls the witch stole, I think. But that still makes both the start of her winning the swimming regionals, and the end of her getting comically punched after being launched into the city amid various magical rings… uh… magicing… all the more confusing. It’s still a welcome surprise considering that all the pre-air stuff seemed to be entirely about her getting a do-over to find true love, not slay Ursula Grace to save her kingdom, but who knows. Maybe it is actually about that.
